Editorial - Change is in the Air

With greatest exposure to high grain prices, Brazilian pork and chicken sectors are expected to feel a greater squeeze this year than the more grass-oriented beef sector.

This is according to a new report by market analysts at Fitch Ratings. Their report, '2013 Outlook: Brazil Protein' looks at large processor liquidity, supply and demand factors and consumption metrics concluding that protein producers will be heavily challenged throughout 2013.

Viktoria Krane, a director and analyst at Fitch Ratings and co-author of the report, said the meat industry is in for a rough 12 months.

After 50 years of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), farm minister Stéphane Le Foll, is setting aside France's post-war productiviste past as he prepares to turn France into a European leader for agro-ecology.

Speaking at the opening of the recent Salon International de l'Agriculture (SIA) in Paris, which also celebrated a half century this year, he described agriculture as "the heart of French countryside which pulses through the territories. Every day, I observe the extent to which it is the central activity of our regions, 10 per cent, 20 per cent or 30 per cent of the regional economies: it is something that we must protect and promote," he said.

The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has issued a proposed modification to the rules required for the labelling of muscle cut commodities covered under the US Country of Origin Labelling (COOL) programme.

The new labelling is not being praised by all of industry. The American Meat Institute says the proposed rule will make current costly, cumbersome requirements even more onerous and disruptive.

Finally, turning to bird flu news, reports have been received of outbreaks in India's state of Bihar, Rajbari district of Bangladesh and in Cambodia. A low-pathogenic form of the H5N1 type has been in a duck in a mixed flock in Western Australia.

Ceva to launch latest vaccine solutions at VIV Asia

85% of the global growth in poultry production is expected to come from emerging markets, Asia in particular. With the industry facing a trend towards both higher and more volatile feed costs, profitability will be driven by investments in optimal efficiency. Partnerships and the sharing of knowledge will be a key factor of success, as Asian poultry producers strive to feed a rapidly growing population.

Ceva's focus at VIV Asia will be on our customers and in particular how our technologically advanced vaccines, equipment, programs and services can add real value to their operations.
