World's Poultry Vets Meet in France

This week, the World Veterinary Poultry Association (WVPA) has been holding its Congress in the French city of Nantes. Around 1,300 delegates from 80 countries are attending the meeting, growing their knowledge of poultry health, meeting up with old friends and making new contacts for the future.

ThePoultrySite has been reporting from the Congress, including the highlights of the first day and a paper by Dr Robyn Alders on the strong links between healthy family poultry and healthy communities in developing countries and the importance of small-scale production in sustainable food security and safety in these regions in the 21st century.

Classical and emerging diseases of poultry as well as zoonoses, infections that impact both man and birds have been the central theme of the congress.

At the opening of the congress, Dr Trevor Bagust of the University of Melbourne, Australia, and President of the Association said that while avian influenza A(H5N1) has dominated thinking for the first decade of the 21st century, it is the recent H7N9 serotype in China that the World Health Organization describes as "unusually dangerous".

Because it causes no symptoms in poultry, its presence is much more difficult to track and there is also evidence of person-to-person transmission of infection, he said.

The first day saw a range of discussions from the microbiological safety of poultry products to fusarium trichothecene mycotoxins and intestinal health in poultry, bacterial respiratory diseases of poultry, oncogenic avian viruses and mycoplasma synoviae .

Dr Filip Van Immerseel from the University of Ghent presented the Avian Pathology Lecture on necrotic enteritis.

The conference closes on Friday 23 August. The next WVPA Congress - the 19th - will take place in South Africa in 2015 and Edinburgh, Scotland, was voted this week to be the venue for the 20th conference in 2017.

Continuing with news from France, Stéphan Le Foll, the country's agriculture minister, set out an action plan last week for the French poultry sector in a bid to redress the imbalance in the market.

In the last few days, the Minister has appointed Muriel Guillet and Yves Riou to the General Council of the Food, the Agriculture and Rural Areas to help the poultry and egg industries out of their present difficulties.

In news of avian flu in the last week, significant outbreaks have continued to hit poultry flocks in Nepal and in Cambodia, while Italy has reported an outbreak of the H7N7 avian influenza A virus in a layer flock near Padua in the Emilia-Romagna. Following surveillance of neighbouring flocks, a second outbreak has since been reported; the latest outbreak is in a flock owned by the same company as the original one.
