Atlanta Expo Debates Antibiotics in Poultry Production

The animal agriculture industry has been wrongly accused of irresponsibility in its use of antibiotics.

Dr Richard Raymond, the former Undersecretary for Food Safety at the US Department of Agriculture speaking at a US Poultry & Egg Association seminar on pathogen reduction at the International Production and Processing Exhibition (IPPE) in Atlanta said that the current uses and doses of antibiotics for animals have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration as appropriate.

He hit back at the critics of the use of antibiotics in animal feed and said that they had exaggerate the reported overuse of antibiotics as growth promoters. He specifically attacked the campaign led by Congresswoman Louise Slaughter that said that 80 per cent of all antibiotics sold in the US were given to perfectly healthy animals raised for food.

He said that the campaigners had failed to mention that the antibiotics are also used to protect animals from diseases and others are given to companion animals, which the official figures from the FDA show.

Dr Raymond said that more than 28 per cent of the antibiotics sold are ionophores, which are given to keep chickens and turkeys healthy and to treat coccidiosis. He added that these antibiotics cannot be given to humans.

He explained that new moves by the USDA to change the system of poultry meat inspection will place more inspectors at the sharp end of detecting food safety issues rather than quality issues.

Dr Raymond said that the new regulations will also help to save money while improving the service, adding that a modernisation rule on inspection is expected shortly.

Turning to news of bird flu, there have been five new outbreaks of H5N8 highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in farms located in three provinces in South Korea while in Hong Kong, the H7N9 bird flu virus has been detected at a local agricultural products wholesale market, resulting in the culling of about 20,000 poultry at the market. China has also culled poultry after the H7N9 avian flu virus was found as two poultry markets recently.

Merck Animal Health Hosts Inaugural Culinary Tour of Nations Luncheon at 2014 International Production & Processing Expo

Attendees Gain Valuable Information on the Benefits of Vaccination Programs

SUMMIT, NEW JERSEY January 16, 2014 – Merck Animal Health (known as MSD Animal Health outside the USA and Canada) announced it will host an inaugural luncheon titled: Culinary Tour of Nations at this year’s International Production & Processing Expo in Atlanta, Georgia, January 28-30. The luncheon will feature various poultry dishes from different continents that guest can enjoy while having the opportunity to learn more about the Convenience Program developed by Merck Animal Health.

The Convenience Program is designed to meet farmers’ current and future needs for process improvement and performance enhancement. The method of vaccine timing introduced through the Convenience Program combines in-ovo/subcutaneous and day-old vaccination application. This provides earlier and longer protection against respiratory diseases of concern to the poultry industry. Merck Animal Health has developed an effective range of vaccines with biological behaviors that allows them to be combined, without losing efficacy.

The luncheon will be held on January 29 at 12:00 PM in the exhibit center and is by invitation only. Attendees who are interested in attending the event should contact their local Merck Animal Health sales representative or visit the Merck Animal Health booth #151 in Hall A.
