Weekly Overview: Value of Poultry Sector to US Economy

Over the last two years, the poultry industry in the United States has added 477,000 jobs and had an impact on economic output to the tune of $204 billion, according to a new study.

A dynamic and integral part of the national economy, from 2012 to 2014, the poultry industry collectively increased the number of jobs from 1,337,020 to 1,814,200, amount of wages from $63 billion to $100.2 billion, total economic activity from $265.5 billion to $469.6 billion, and government revenue from $23.4 billion to $32.9 billion.

The study breaks down poultry into three sub-categories: chicken, turkey and eggs.

Mexico has called on Canada and the US to join forces and form a committee to harmonise the management of poultry diseases in North America.

The Chinese government has announced that it will ban all imports of US poultry and egg products because of recent detections in the US of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in backyard poultry and wild birds in the Pacific Northwest. The US industry says it expected China to take a regional approach, at the most, in line with international trade guidelines.

And finally, highly pathogenic avian flu is causing havoc in Taiwan as it spreads rapidly through the country, particularly in goose flocks. Both the H5N2 and H5N8 variants have been detected. There has also been an outbreak of H5 influenza in Nigerian poultry, the first outbreak there since 2008. Further human victims of the disease have been reported in China and Egypt.
