Avian Influenza: Latest Outbreaks, Market Impacts and Vaccine Development

This week, there have been more announcements of confirmed highly pathogenic avian influenza outbreaks in the US, continuing an epidemic that has been devastating for many US poultry producers, as well as the food service and retail operators that rely on their supply.

Over 40 million birds have now been affected, with the total standing at 41,034,973.

The two latest outbreaks bring the total number of detections in the epidemic to 181, since December 2014 – read more on the latest outbreaks.

However, the worst bird flu outbreak in US history may be over by July, according to the top US veterinary officer.

The number of cases and birds affected by the disease has been steadily declining since mid-April, although there are still significant outbreaks among egg laying birds, found analysts Steve Meyer and Len Steiner in their look at the US Department of Agriculture’s confirmed outbreak data.

The epidemic, centred in Iowa, has heavily impacted the US’ major egg-laying region, with prices for shell eggs reaching $2.40 per dozen, a 93 per cent increase from a month ago.

Turkey prices have also increased sharply, with turkey breast meat currently up 21 per cent in the past four weeks and nearing all time record high levels.

On the other hand, US chicken prices have seen the opposite effect, as countries that would normally import US chicken placed a hold on trade, in an attempt to prevent the disease spreading – read more.

In other influenza news, researchers at Kansas State University have managed to develop a vaccine for the H5N1 and H7N9 strains of avian influenza, using a method based on the Newcastle disease virus.

The strains have led to the culling of millions of commercial chickens and turkeys as well as the death of hundreds of people, though they are not responsible for the epidemic in the US, which is caused by the H5N2 strain.

The researchers combined DNA from the flu viruses with DNA from the Newcastle disease virus, creating a vaccine that protected chickens from both diseases.

As well as being an exciting development for the poultry industry, the approach also shows promise for creating vaccines against common diseases of pigs, cattle and sheep – read more.
