Disease-Detecting Poultry Biochip Launched

There has been an interesting development in poultry science this week, as a 'biochip' has been launched in Singapore that can detect nine major poultry diseases using a single sample applied to the portable, disposable chip.

The device is unlike the conventional method of testing which requires different samples for different tests.

The disease agents detected by the miniature laboratory include Newcastle disease virus, Salmonella pullorum, Salmonella enteritidis, campylobacter and avian influenza virus. The chip is able to detect all avian influenza virus types, but places special emphasis on differentiating H5, H7 and H9.

Scientists from the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA) and Veredus Laboratories, a supplier of molecular diagnostic tools, have been working on the chip since 2010 – read more.

Avian Flu Update

This week the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) released a report into the likely ways that avian influenza has been spreading around the US.

The organisation collected data on the characteristics and biosecurity measures of infected farms using surveys and site visits, studied wind and airborne viruses as possible causes of viral spread, and conducted a genetic analysis of the viruses detected in the US.

Whilst the USDA could not associate the outbreaks with one particular method of transmission, lapses in biosecurity practices were identified on some of the infected farms.

For example, the USDA observed sharing of employees and equipment between infected and non-infected premises and a lack of disinfection of vehicles moving between farms – read more.

Continuing the trend of fewer outbreaks in the US, only one new outbreak was confirmed this week, in Iowa.

The newly confirmed outbreak brings the total number of detections in the US to 223, affecting over 48 million birds – read more.

Other countries to report avian flu outbreaks of several different types this week were Iran, Russia, Germany, and Taiwan.

Probiotics in Poultry Poultry Signals

Proper management starts with recognising signals in practice. For poultry-keepers, this means being alert when in the hen house, watching and listening to the animals, and paying attention to their behaviour as a group as well as their individual behaviour.
