Novel Avian Influenza Virus Discovered in China

This week, Chinese researchers announced that they had found a novel type of avian flu in samples from a live bird market.

The scientists took samples in 2013 from seven chickens, a quail, and a duck at two live-bird markets in Hangzhou, a city in Zhejiang province, which were linked to outbreaks of human H7N9 cases. Their report does not say that any of the birds were displaying symptoms of avian flu.

The novel H5N9 virus they found is a hybrid of various other avian influenza viruses.

Using genetic sequencing, the researchers discovered that the novel virus received a highly pathogenic H5 gene from the H5N1 avian flu virus and an N9 gene from a human-infecting H7N9 virus, along with other elements.

However, the virus only caused low mortality rates when tested on mice. Some mice exposed to the highest doses died, but mice receiving lower doses did not suffer from the disease. They also found that the virus didn't spread from infected mice to others placed with them.

The team determined that the novel H5N9 virus prefers avian-type cell receptors, rather than the human-type receptor, which may explain why the virus caused low mortality in mice - read more.

In other avian influenza news, no new outbreaks of the disease have been reported in the US this week.

However, the H5N1 type of the disease has continued to affect African countries, with 30 new outbreaks announced in Nigeria, and five more outbreaks found in Ghana

Ghana's Northern Regional Veterinary Officer has called on the media to help create public awareness of the outbreak of the highly pathogenic H5N1 avian influenza in certain areas of the country, reported Modern Ghana.

Dr Mathias Kojo Ayensu advised farmers to report all flu symptoms in birds to the veterinary service, adding that the government has a package for farmers affected by the disease.

"The low virulent form might lead to ruffled feathers, soft shelled eggs and a drop in egg production," he said - read more.

Other countries reporting outbreaks of avian flu this week were Israel, China and Taiwan.

Probiotics in Poultry Poultry Signals

Proper management starts with recognising signals in practice. For poultry-keepers, this means being alert when in the hen house, watching and listening to the animals, and paying attention to their behaviour as a group as well as their individual behaviour.

GLOBAL POULTRY TRENDS - Individuals Eat Less Turkey
Few countries actually attempt to measure poultry consumption. In most instances the figures are not measures of the actual quantities consumed, but are estimates of the supplies available for consumption divided by estimates of the population, writes industry analyst Terry Evans.

Managing Fly Infestations in Poultry and Pig Production
Did you know that fly infestations in pig and poultry buildings could be costing livestock farmers 10 per cent in lost growth rates and egg production? That could equate to over €10 (£8.50) per pig in extra feed requirement.

The UK's avian disease emerging threats report for the first quarter of 2015 describes cases of enterococcal and streptococcal infections, colibacillosis of several types, and an unusual diagnosis of leucocis in chickens.
