Calls for More Funds to Tackle Avian Flu in West Africa

Although the avian influenza outbreak in the US seems to have ended, at least for the present, fears are growing over the outbreaks in West Africa and the potential for further spread of the disease.

This week, there have been more confirmed outbreaks reported in Ghana and Nigeria by the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE).

The outbreaks were all of the H5N1 subtype, which can be transmitted to humans and is considered highly lethal. However, the World Health Organisation (WHO) says this virus does not infect humans easily, and spread from person to person appears to be unusual.

Following the recent outbreaks, the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) is calling for $20 million to help West African countries with prevention and response activities.

Such activities would include bolstering weak veterinary systems, improving the capabilities of local laboratories and putting FAO specialists on the ground in affected and at-risk countries.

“Based on what we do know, there is a real risk of further virus spread. Urgent action is needed to strengthen veterinary investigation and reporting systems in the region and tackle the disease at the root, before there is a spill-over to humans,” said Juan Lubroth, Chief of FAO’s Animal Health Service Division.

The organisation said that since the virus was re-introduced in Nigeria in late, more than 1.6 million birds have been culled or have died from the virus.

Avian flu could trigger a mass die-off of chickens – a nutritious and inexpensive source of food for many people– with detrimental impacts on diets and on the economy of the region, exacerbating an already difficult situation.

“We’re looking at a disease - H5N1 - that has already spread to five countries in six months. We have to make a concerted effort to stop it in its tracks and we have to do it now,” Mr Lubroth said – read more.

The region's poultry industry is also suffering from smuggling of cheap imported poultry products, which have been undercutting the local poultry producers' prices. Countries that have been affected the most include Nigeria, according to our reporter Tawanda Karombo.

The West African country’s Customs Service confirmed this month that it had seized huge consignments of frozen poultry products along the border with Benin, in a new crackdown operation against smuggling.

Wale Adeniyi, the head of public relations for the Nigerian Customs Service, said in a statement that the seized consignments included about 1803 cartons of banned poultry products that were being imported into the country.

“Most of the seizures were made when commercial vehicles conveying them were apprehended by Customs Officers. However, a significant number were made on the Iyafin Badagry waterways on the Lagoon that stretches through the Nigeria-Benin Border,” he said - read more.
