Best Biosecurity May Be Insufficient to Prevent US Avian Flu Resurgence

This week, the pressure grew on US poultry producers to prepare for potential new outbreaks of avian flu in the autumn (fall), as discussions on the subject intensified.

Even the best biosecurity job might not be good enough to prevent a resurgence of the highly pathogenic virus, according to Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, who spoke at a conference organised to discuss the ‘lessons learned’ in Iowa recently.

“There may well be a re-emergence; and if there is, we will be dealing again with the issue of depopulation,” Mr Vilsack said.

At the same conference, Iowa Governor Terry Branstad remarked that Iowa was one of the states hit hardest by the outbreak, commenting that “according to USDA’s latest egg production report, Iowa egg production in June was down 44 per cent from one year ago.”

Some useful advice arising from producer panel discussions included the importance of not delaying depopulation, bio-filtering incoming air to high-value poultry houses and testing water prior to moving birds.

Producers also emphasised the importance of prior planning to allow better disease containment, such as having a robust biosecurity programme, a disposal plan, adequate supplies, a defined leadership and chain of command, state/federal contact information, and a plan for continuity of clean operations - read more.

Also this week, Vermont’s State Veterinarian urged poultry owners to be prepared, noting that the East Coast states are expected to be affected by avian flu in autumn 2015 or spring 2016 - read more.

Avian flu outbreaks around the world this week were situated in Viet Nam, Taiwan, Ghana and Nigeria.
