Huge Economic Impacts of US Avian Flu Outbreaks Revealed

This week, two reports showed the effect of the highly pathogenic avian influenza outbreaks on jobs, incomes and export revenue across the US.

The bird flu outbreaks cost the badly-affected state of Iowa nearly 8,500 jobs and nearly $427 million in lost income and taxes, according to a report released by the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation.

IFBF Director of Research and Commodity Services Dave Miller said the ripple effects of the lost jobs and revenue could last for up to three years, which will also impact egg and poultry prices, since it takes months to get the birds and the staff back in place.

“Egg prices are likely to peak out this summer, but the 'elevated' price for eggs is likely to linger for a minimum of 12 months and could last for two to three years. Recovery from this outbreak which devastated Iowa egg and poultry farms will not be swift,” said Mr Miller – read more.

Another report from the US Poultry and Egg Export Council said that the impact of lost exports reached nearly $390 million during the first half of 2015.

This sharp drop in export value, one of the largest ever for a January to June span, is a graphic example of the economic effect this year’s multi-state outbreak has had on the industry.

The good news for American producers is that some countries have begun lifting their import restrictions on poultry products originating in certain states, now that more than 90 days have passed since affected farms were cleaned and disinfected – read more.

In the latest response to the outbreaks, the US Department of Agriculture has moved to stockpile poultry vaccines against certain types of avian flu, and have asked suppliers to come forward.

In their announcement, the USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) said that no decision has yet been made on whether to use the vaccines, but that adequate supplies were needed ahead of possible future outbreaks.

Use of vaccines is controversial because of the potential trade impacts – some other countries are expected to ban poultry imports when vaccines have been used, until their own investigations can establish the safety of vaccine products – read more here.

Outbreaks of avian flu around the world this week included cases in Nigeria, Gaza, Mexico, China, Ghana, and South Africa.
