Poultry Provided for Conflict-Hit Ukrainian Families

This week, several news items highlighted the importance of poultry for development and improving people’s prospects.

The UN's Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) has begun providing chickens to help vulnerable households whose livelihoods have been compromised by the ongoing conflict in eastern Ukraine.

A total of 7000 three-week-old chickens are being distributed this week to small farms in Donetsk and Luhansk regions.

FAO emergency response coordinator Farrukh Toirov said that the living conditions, food and nutrition security of the people living in the conflict buffer zone are deteriorating.

The dual-purpose chickens are going to 350 beneficiary households.

Each family will also receive 200 kilos of specially formulated chicken feed, sufficient for three months, after which the birds will be ready for slaughter. Families that choose to keep the hens for egg production can expect them to start laying about five months from now.

“In providing these and other farming inputs, our goal is to safeguard the food security and livelihoods of the most at-risk families improve nutrition and prevent further economic losses due to the conflict,” said Mr Toirov – read more.

A collaboration was also announced to help revamp Ghana’s poultry industry, which has slumped in the last 30 years.

The partnership between the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the American Soybean Association (ASA) will benefit soybean producers in the US, as the project will procure feed ingredients for the Ghanaian industry, including 15,000 metric tons of US soybean meal.

The project will also train Ghanaian poultry producers, improve feed milling practices and products, enhance storage and handling of feedstuffs, among other actions – read more here.

In this week’s disease news, avian flu outbreaks were found in Nigeria and in Viet Nam.

Whilst no new avian flu outbreaks have been reported from the US since mid-June, concerns remain over a possible resurgence of the disease heading into colder weather.

Analysts Steve Meyer and Len Steiner rate such a resurgence as critical for market prices in the next few months and heading into 2016 – read more.
