USDA Stockpiles Avian Flu Vaccines in Further Preparation for Potential Autumn Outbreaks

The USDA has awarded contracts to two companies to manufacture doses of avian influenza (AI) vaccine for its National Veterinary Stockpile.

In a statement, the agency insisted the move signalled preparation for future outbreaks, rather than a decision to vaccinate.

So far, no vaccines have been approved for use against avian influenza in the event of another outbreak. Many people in the industry are concerned that approving vaccines may lead to other countries preventing poultry imports from the US, on animal health grounds.

However, the mood has been shifting in the direction of greater support for vaccine use since the devastating outbreaks of bird flu in the US earlier this year.

Dr Yannick Gardin, Director of Science and Innovation at Ceva, one of the two companies awarded the contract, said that: "Many dogmas have grown up surrounding the control of AI. Countries who decided to vaccinate were viewed as ‘bad’ because they were seen to have a problem with the disease.

"This is no longer appropriate though, given the changeable nature of the AI virus, which is now able to survive for long periods of time in wildfowl (migratory birds)."

USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service said that any decision to use vaccination in a future HPAI outbreak would require careful consideration of the efficacy of the vaccine, any impacts of using HPAI vaccine in the field, and the potential trade impacts – read more.

In other preparations, Pennsylvania’s Agriculture Department has asked waterfowl hunters to be on the lookout for signs of highly pathogenic avian influenza during this hunting season.

Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding said: “We want hunters to be aware of the signs of HPAI. If any hunters were to come in contact with an infected bird, we’d want them to know the signs to minimise the spread of the virus.”

The Department said that HPAI symptoms are rarer in wild birds than in poultry, but that the H5 HPAI virus strains that circulated in North American wild and domestic birds last winter and spring did cause disease in certain species of waterfowl and raptors. Geese are more likely to show signs of disease than ducks – read more here.

Outbreaks of avian influenza have been reported around the world this week, including in Laos, Viet Nam, Nigeria and Ghana.
