Retailers Make Progress on Campylobacter on Chicken

The latest test results for fresh chicken from the UK's Food Standards Agency (FSA) show a significant reduction in campylobacter contamination from last year.

Only 15 per cent of samples, down from 22 per cent in the same period last year (July to September 2014), tested positive for the highest levels of campylobacter contamination.

The FSA said that reducing the proportion of birds in this category will have the biggest positive impact on public health.

The results also showed that campylobacter was present on 76 per cent of chicken samples, down from 83 per cent in the same months of last year.

The results varied between retailers, with Co-op and Waitrose making the most significant reductions in the proportion of the chickens they sell that are most highly-contaminated – click here to read more.

This week, there was also a development on the issue of US poultry meat imports into South Africa.

The two sides have finally agreed on a veterinary trade protocol, which allows continued exports of poultry from those areas in the US that are not affected by avian influenza, in the event of a future outbreak.

This was a key demand of the American side, and South Africa’s statement said that the agreement was a “significant milestone” in helping the country to keep its benefits under the US’ African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA).

The US said last week that duty free market access for South African agricultural goods would be suspended in January unless South Africa’s barriers to US meat imports are eliminated.

However, Mike Brown, president of the National Chicken Council and Jim Sumner, president of the USA Poultry & Egg Export Council said: "Two obstacles still remain, though, one pertaining to food safety and the other is an acceptable quota allocation procedure by the South African government.”

South Africa’s statement added that the 65,000 ton quota for US poultry imports will be implemented by 31 December – read more.
