No Beak Trimming Ban for UK - Yet

Since last week's newsletter, the UK’s farming minister George Eustice announced that a proposed ban on beak trimming in layers will not be introduced in January 2016.

The news will come as a relief to many poultry farmers, as there was concern that the ban would result in serious incidences of feather pecking and cannibalism, with negative consequences for business as well as poultry welfare.

The announcement came as a result of a report submitted by the Beak Trimming Action Group (BTAG), which was set up by the government to investigate the issue, and involved representatives from different stakeholders, including industry, government, welfare groups and vets.

"The Group advised that the risks of introducing a ban on infra-red beak trimming are too great," Mr Eustice said.

"It could result in outbreaks of severe feather pecking and having to employ emergency beak trimming using the hot blade method, which is a far worse outcome from an animal welfare perspective."

However, the Group said that the industry should work towards implementing a beak trimming ban in future, when management techniques have developed enough for a ban to be implemented without compromising welfare – read more here.

In avian flu news this week, two further outbreaks were reported in France’s Dordogne region. The affected farms were identified as part of the emergency response to the first highly pathogenic outbreak detected last week.

Other outbreaks were found in Viet Nam, Nigeria, and Ghana.

An avian flu expert from Purdue University has raised concerns over the US Department of Agriculture’s strategy of stockpiling vaccines. Although no vaccine has yet been approved for use in the event of a future outbreak, requests have been sent out to manufacturers to further build stocks.

Suresh Mittal, a professor of comparative pathobiology at Purdue's College of Veterinary Medicine, warned that it is very difficult to predict the strain and nature of the next outbreak, due to the circulation of the virus in wild birds – read more.

Chickens for Christmas: Ghana's Unique Poultry Market
Francis de Heer describes the development of the poultry meat industry in Ghana, and the challenges the industry must overcome in future.

Chemistry of Oxidative Disinfectants
Oxidative disinfectants share the property of acting on microbes by oxidising their proteins and cells. This aggressive chemical reaction ‘burns up’ and dismembers the very structure of the molecule which is oxidised, thus very effectively destroying target pathogens. (Non-oxidising disinfectants disable pathogens in other ways by modifying their structure but not necessarily completely destroying it).
