French Bird Flu Outbreak Total Continues to Rise

On Tuesday, ThePoultrySite reported that the total number of outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza in France had risen to 53, in six different south western provinces.

However, the outbreak total has risen further to 61, after eight new outbreaks were reported in Landes region.

On December 21, a highly pathogenic avian influenza has been identified in Cagnotte following a clinical suspicion in ducks farmed for fois gras.

Seven other highly pathogenic H5 avian influenza outbreaks were reported in duck farms as part of poultry sent to slaughter from the restricted area of Doazit – three outbreaks were in the town of Eyres Moncube, two of which are associated with an H5N9 strain of the virus, and four more outbreaks were reported in the towns of Cazalis, Hauriet, Mugron and Montsoue.

The exact strains of the viruses involved are still being determined.

Canada announced this week it is stepping up surveillance efforts for avian influenza, with an investment of $300,000 to strengthen the early detection and response measures to avian flu.

The funding will be used to enhance the resources at the Ministry of Agriculture's Animal Health Centre in Abbotsford with specialised equipment to diagnose samples collected in the Ministry's avian flu surveillance efforts – click here to read more.

This week we also reported on the EU’s medium-term Agricultural Outlook for the years up to 2025.

The report suggests population and economic growth in developing countries are expected to support higher meat demand and contribute to higher EU meat exports.

World meat consumption is expected to increase by 15 per cent between 2015 and 2025, less than in the previous decade, but still equivalent to a year's total meat production in the EU.

Thanks to economic recovery and slightly lower prices, overall per capita meat consumption in the EU recovered by a staggering 1.8 kg in 2014.

EU poultry meat production is expected to expand over the outlook period by close to 4 per cent, while consumption could increase only marginally – read more here.

We would like to wish all our readers a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. The poultry newsletter will return on Thursday 7 January, 2016. In the meantime, go to our homepage for some special Christmas articles.
