Scotland Faces Avian Influenza Outbreak

This week, an avian influenza outbreak was declared near Dunfermline in Scotland.

The outbreak was announced as a suspected case on Monday (11 January), but was confirmed through laboratory testing within a few days, as part of what Chief Vet Shiela Voas called “well-rehearsed contingency plans”.

The virus is a very mild form of H5N1 avian influenza, which officials were quick to reassure people is not the same as the more virulent H5N1 strain that has caused problems around the world in the last decade.

“The process of humanely culling all of the birds on the farm is now underway, and the one kilometre restrictions around the premises will remain in force for 21 days after preliminary cleansing and disinfection.

“The eggs supplied by this broiler breeder unit are not for human consumption but are sent to a company hatchery. As a precaution, those eggs are being destroyed and the movement of poultry or poultry products at that site is restricted until that process is complete,” said the Chief Vet in a statement.

As investigations are at an early stage, authorities are not yet able to say what caused the outbreak, but poultry keepers have been urged to remain vigilant – read more.

In other avian flu news, a team of researchers has developed a vaccine that protects poultry from multiple strains of avian influenza found in the US.

The vaccine has the potential to be administered through water or into embryonated eggs, making it easier for poultry producers to vaccinate flocks.

"The vaccine we produced is a live vaccine, which means it replicates in birds," said Prof Jürgen Richt from Kansas State University, one of the researchers involved in the discovery.

"Because it's live, we believe that the vaccine could be sprayed into the air or put in the water supply so that when the chickens need a drink, they could be vaccinated. A poultry farm could vaccinate all of its birds in a single day." – Read more.
