Avian Flu Returns to US Poultry Farms

Following last week’s announcement of a new avian influenza outbreak in Scotland, another outbreak was found in Indiana, US over the weekend.

The highly pathogenic outbreak was discovered after abnormal mortality on a commercial poultry farm in Dubois county.

Tests showed that the outbreak was of the H7N8 strain, which is not known to cause infections in humans.

After the case was discovered, new response plans for avian influenza outbreaks, formulated following the US’ 2015 outbreaks, swung into action to prevent further spread.

Following extra surveillance of flocks in the surrounding area, officials found nine more outbreaks of H7 low pathogenic avian flu in flocks in southwestern Indiana.

“It appears that there was a low pathogenic virus circulating in the poultry population in this area, and that virus likely mutated into a highly pathogenic virus in one flock,” said Dr John Clifford, USDA Chief Veterinarian – click here to read more.

In the latest update from the state’s animal health department, officials said that state and federal teams had visited 1248 residences in a 10-kilometre radius control zone around the original site, as part of the huge response operation.

The teams are searching for small, backyard flocks of birds for precautionary monitoring and testing, and have found 46 so far, with sampling in progress.

A total of 401,163 birds will eventually be culled on the infected premises found so far – read more.

Meanwhile, poultry meat and egg industries in the US, Canada and Mexico have announced they will be working more closely together to combat avian flu in the future.

The three countries signed a Letter of Understanding (LOU) to exchange technical knowledge and harmonise their responses to the disease - read more.
