Constant Progress in Poultry Performance, but Challenges Remain

Speaking at the Poultry Market Intelligence Forum at the International Production and Processing Expo (IPPE) in Atlanta last week, Michael Donohue from Agristats described the huge leaps and bounds the poultry industry has made since he first started working in it in the 1980s.

Mr Donohue said the rate of change has been phenomenal.

Improvements came over the years in all sorts of performance areas, including mortality, feed conversion efficiency and eviscerated yield.

Mr Donohue said these improvements had helped sustainability of the industry, with a smaller area of poultry barns and feed-producing fields needed to produce the same amount of poultry meat, as well as bringing price benefits to consumers.

However, Mr Donohue outlined how the poultry industry still faces challenges, such as dealing with antibiotic-free production and woody breast condition.

Profitability for producers is fragile and dependent on feed ingredient costs, which further depends on crop yields and weather, he said – click here to read more.

We will continue to add further articles from IPPE, so keep an eye on ThePoultrySite for more.

In other news, the British Veterinary Association (BVA) has expressed its concern that almost two-thirds of food companies have no information on their commitment to stunning animals before slaughter.

The findings were published in the Business Benchmark on Farm Animal Welfare report.

The group of vets believes that all animals should be stunned before slaughter to render them insensible to pain.

BVA President Sean Wensley said: "The European Commission’s study of 13,500 meat consumers across Europe found that 72 per cent wanted information about the stunning of animals at slaughter.

"Food companies need to sit up and take consumers’ concerns about humane slaughter seriously. People want to be assured that farmed animals receive both a good life and a humane death.” – Read more.
