How Does a Farm Become Infected with Avian Influenza?

This week we featured an article on the common features of farms that become infected with avian influenza.

After the devastating impacts of the highly pathogenic avian influenza outbreaks in the US last year, all stakeholders were keen to learn lessons and improve future responses to the disease.

A seminar series on the lessons learned was presented at the recent International Production and Processing Expo (IPPE) in Atlanta, Georgia.

Dr Lindsey Garber, from USDA-APHIS, talked about her studies into the spread of the disease through flocks.

Dr Garber said that even on the infected farms, biosecurity practices were pretty decent, but fewer than half of the case farms had conducted biosecurity audits.

"Audits are important to be able to assess how well biosecurity policies have been implemented on farms, so that's one area that we think could use a little improvement," she said.

The study identified that very few of the affected farms had their own designated vehicles and equipment, which could be a route for bringing the virus onto farms.

Another concerning pattern was that on approximately a third of these case farms, the producers had seen wild birds in the barn, which is another potential pathway to bring disease in – click here to read more.

France announced two new decrees this week to help with the clean up effort from avian influenza and prevent further outbreaks from occurring.

There have been 70 outbreaks of the disease in total, in the fois gras-producing southwestern region of France since November 2015.

Several different strains of the virus caused devastation for poultry farmers as thousands of birds had to be destroyed.

One of the two new decrees sets out the conditions for depopulation and allowing farmers to restock, including appropriate screening and biosecurity measures.

The second order sets out farmers' obligations to adopt biosecurity measures – read more.

This week we also reported on more outbreaks of avian influenza in Nigeria, South Africa, Taiwan and Cote D’Ivoire.
