Poultry Markets Recovering After Difficult End to 2015

The margin outlook for the global poultry industry is gradually improving after challenging conditions in quarter four of 2015, notably significant oversupply, according to Rabobank’s Poultry Quarterly Q1 2016 report.

The main factors driving recovery are increasing demand, lower supply growth in key regions like the US, China, Thailand and Europe, and price support from recovering red meat markets.

The biggest factor to watch for in 2016 is Asian supply, given restrictions on breeding stock will reduce production - primarily in China, and also in Thailand and Korea - in the second half of 2016.

Rabobank’s Animal Protein Senior Analyst Nan-Dirk Mulder said: “This will have a strong short-term local and global market impact and will lead to local tight market conditions, increased Chinese imports and pressured Thai exports.” – Click here to read more.

Looking at US supply reports, the combination of heavier broiler weights and larger slaughter means that broiler production last week was (roughly) 5.7 per cent higher than the same week a year ago, CME analysts Steve Meyer and Len Steiner calculated.

“While meat supplies are increasing, the rate of the increase has been slower than the same period last year. Looking back at February 2015, combined red meat and poultry supplies were increasing at well over four per cent year on year,” they said.

Supply increase will continue to prevent price inflation in the short term, but the slower growth in supplies, stronger exports and still robust consumer demand could set the stage for a more robust meat market in quarter two, they predicted – read more.

In Russia, the latest figures from the US Department of Agriculture's Foreign Agricultural Service (USDA-FAS) suggest that poultry imports will halve to 130,000 MT in 2016.

Local products continue to replace imports of poultry meat in Russia, as factors such as the weak ruble, restrictive trade policies, and competitive domestic products coincide – read more.
