US Poultry Reaches South Africa for First Time in Over 15 Years

The first shipment of US poultry has reached South Africa after years of wrangling over import tariffs.

On Friday, the first shipment of poultry (frozen chicken legs) arrived at the Port of Durban and was cleared by the Port Health Authorities, allowing the products to be placed on retail shelves before the deadline of 15 March.

The completed negotiations allow South Africa to keep its agricultural concessions under the US’ Agricultural Growth and Opportunities Act (AGOA).

US Senators Chris Coons (D-Del.) and Johnny Isakson (R-Ga.), who had campaigned for the chicken access as co-chairs of the Senate Chicken Caucus, welcomed the news.

“We are thrilled that after more than 15 years of South Africa illegally blocking imports of US poultry, chicken from Delaware, Georgia, and states around the United States will finally reach the dinner tables of South Africans,” they said.

“Today’s news is the result of years of hard work and negotiations led by our poultry producers and US trade officials, and we are proud to have also played a part.

“This is a significant win for poultry farmers in Delaware and Georgia and for South Africans who will now have access to our healthy, affordable, and high-quality poultry.”

South Africa’s Trade Minister Rob Davies thanked stakeholders in the poultry sector, as well as the beef and pork sectors, which have also completed negotiations.

Mr Davies said the process of discussing market access for South African products to the US is continuing.

“In addition, discussions are under way to facilitate exports to the US in a number of products including chicken breast, ostrich meat, avocados and mangoes,” said Mr Davies.

This week, we also covered the impact of cheap meat imports on farmers in South Africa. The South African Poultry Association (SAPA) has estimated that another 18,000 jobs could be created if poultry meat imports were stopped, Glenneis Kriel reported.

Local producers are struggling to compete with imports due to high feed, energy and labour costs – read more.
