Weather, Biosecurity Investigated as Risk Factors in Indiana Bird Flu Outbreaks

This week, the United States Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) released a preliminary report on the outbreaks of avian influenza in Indiana in January.

The incident was short and well contained, with only one case of highly pathogenic H7N8 and eight cases of low pathogenic H7N8 bird flu confirmed.

APHIS’ new report shows that that all viruses are of North American wild bird lineage, the highly pathogenic and low pathogenic viruses are very similar, and the low pathogenic virus mutated into highly pathogenic at just one farm.

One of the factors examined was the weather. The weather in Dubois County, Indiana was warmer and wetter than in previous years, which may have contributed to the introduction and persistence of the virus. The report said researchers would look into this factor in more detail in future.

Questionnaires given to producers showed that some risk factors identified during the 2015 outbreaks had been eliminated, but other risks had persisted on the affected farms, suggesting there is still room for improvement on biosecurity – click here to read more.

This week we also reported on many outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian flu in Nigeria, which is struggling to contain the spread of the H5N1 strain of the virus. Poor biosecurity has been linked to outbreaks on many of the affected farms.

In addition, it has emerged that Kuwait has banned imports of poultry products from India over bird flu fears, after some outbreaks of H5N1 were reported in January – visit our dedicated bird flu page to read more.
