Wild Birds to Blame for Avian Flu Spread in Scotland

Since the last newsletter, news came in that an investigation into the causes of an outbreak of mild avian influenza on a poultry farm near Dunfermline, Scotland had concluded.

The report said that indirect contact with wild birds was the most likely source of the virus.

Rural Affairs Secretary Richard Lochhead said: “It is thanks to the company and its private vet that the infection was caught at a very early stage which undoubtedly was a major factor in preventing its spread and ensuring it could be quickly stamped out.

“This isolated case highlights the importance of constant watchfulness and good biosecurity, and the need for individual keepers, industry and the authorities to continue to work together. The new animal health and welfare strategy sets out how we will do this over the coming months and years.” – Click here to read more.

This week we also reported on the success of an intervention in Egypt to reduce exposure to avian influenza, which was run by the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO).

Many Egyptian households slaughter their own poultry, increasing the likelihood of exposure to the virus, particularly among women and children.

Sohair Abel Kader, National Consultant to the programme, commented: "The scientific research conducted on this issue proved that containing the bird in a covered pot for a few minutes immediately after slaughter, specifically till the completion of death struggle, protects those who carry out the slaughter and others around them."

Reports from the area show an increased willingness by people to implement the idea, whilst Dr Amal Aleesaily, director of veterinary medicine in Minia region, said the measure has helped decrease cases of bird flu in Egyptians - read more.

Featured Book of the Week

Global Poultry Trends Global Poultry Trends

This book offers the latest complete data available from recognised international sources on the production, trade and consumption of chicken and turkey meat in almost all countries around the world. The data are given in a series of tables and graphs. These, together with recent trends highlighted, help to identify the key drivers in the poultry meat industry in the future. For example, poultry meat is forecast to overtake pig meat as the largest meat sector within 10 years with an estimated output of more than 127 million tonnes in 2021. 'Global Poultry Trends 2013' offers insights into where that poultry meat will be produced and consumed as well as the sources and destinations of internationally traded products.
