Alaska a Key Location for Bird Flu Transfer to North America

The US Geological Survey has released additional evidence that western Alaska remains a hot spot for avian influenza to enter North America.

The new report announces that while no highly pathogenic avian influenza viruses have been found in Alaska, the state remains an important area to monitor due to migratory bird flyways from North America and Eurasia that overlap the region.

“Our past research in western Alaska has shown that while we have not detected the highly pathogenic avian influenza virus, up to 70 per cent of the other avian influenza viruses isolated in this area were found to contain genetic material from Eurasia, providing evidence for high levels of intercontinental viral exchange,” said Andy Ramey, a scientist with the USGS and lead author of the recent report.

“This is because Asian and North American migratory flyways overlap in western Alaska.” – click here to continue reading.

This week, there were also two big announcements in the egg industry.

In the US, retailer Walmart announced a move to source entirely cage-free eggs by 2025. The company joins many other big businesses that are also heading towards cage-free there, such as McDonald’s and Costco - read more.

Meanwhile in Australia, egg producers welcomed a decision on a new definition for free range egg producers.

Australia's Small Business Minister Kelly O’Dwyer said the new standard meant eggs labelled as free range will require hens to have meaningful and regular access to the outdoors, with outdoor stocking of no more than one hen per square metre (maximum 10,000 hens per hectare).

Stakeholders hope the new standard will be less confusing for consumers.

“The new definition is fundamentally about doing the right thing by consumers to ensure they can make informed decisions about what eggs they wish to buy based on known factors,” said James Kellaway, Managing Director for the Australian Egg Corporation Limited (AECL) - read more.

Poultry Signals Poultry Signals

Proper management starts with recognising signals in practice. For poultry-keepers, this means being alert when in the hen house, watching and listening to the animals, and paying attention to their behaviour as a group as well as their individual behaviour. This usually provides much information about animals’ health, well-being and production for poultry-keepers to use for improving economic results and the well-being of the animals, as well as their own. Poultry farming is currently investing in various new housing systems that require another type of management.

A Simple Guide to the Nutritional Requirements of Poultry
Poultry diets are made up of a mixture of several different feedstuffs including cereal grains, soybean meal, animal by-product meals, fats, and vitamin and mineral premixes. Together with fresh water, these elements provide the energy and nutrients essential for the bird’s growth, reproduction, and health, writes Laura Elliott.
