US Chicken Farmers Often Earn More than Other Farmers, Report Shows

This week, a new report from the National Chicken Council showed that chicken farmers generally have higher incomes compared to all farms and all US households.

The report, prepared by Dr Thomas Elam, president of FarmEcon LLC, also showed a large number of new applicants want to join the industry, and more than half of contract chicken growers stay with the same company for 10 years or more.

“Viewed in totality, live chicken production is a viable, mutually beneficial and attractive farming enterprise for the vast majority of farm families who raise chickens in partnership with the companies they work with,” noted Dr Elam – click here to read more.

In other news from the US, the American Association of Avian Pathologists said this week that antibiotics were an important tool for protecting poultry health and welfare, and whilst use should be minimised as much as possible, they should not be sacrificed for marketing purposes.

The group expressed concerns about the “growing trend” for some food retailers and restaurants to only offer poultry products from flocks raised with no antibiotics.

“This practice may result in situations where farmers are reluctant to allow treatment of flocks in order to maintain their ‘antibiotic free’ status,” the association said, reminding consumers that withdrawal times for antibiotics mean that no drug residues are present in poultry meat or eggs – read more.

This week we also featured a report from Olivia Cooper on the challenges of antibiotic-free production.

The use of probiotics and litter management to keep a balance been ‘good’ and ‘bad’ bacteria are key to the approach, according to experts at a recent conference organised by St David’s Poultry Team - read more.

Editorial – Judicious Antibiotic Use: How Should the Poultry Industry be Judged?
US - Beginning in January 2017, FDA will require veterinarians to issue a veterinary feed directive, or VFD, for any medically important antibiotics administered through poultry or livestock feed. That’ll mean a little more paperwork and recordkeeping for veterinarians, feed mills and producers, but it’s a minor inconvenience if it helps ensure long-term antibiotic efficacy for both humans and animals.
