Indiana Now Free From Avian Flu, Missouri Reports Low-Path Outbreak

This week, we reported on two avian influenza stories from the US.

In Indiana, the last remaining quarantine associated with the highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) cases identified in Dubois County has officially been lifted.

This quarantine release by the Indiana State Board of Animal Health (BOAH) coincides with the state achieving avian influenza-free status, after logging 90 consecutive days with no new cases of the poultry disease.

The quarantines began in January after a commercial turkey farm in Dubois County was diagnosed with the H7N8 HPAI virus, and another nine avian influenza-infected turkey farms were identified nearby through rapid surveillance testing shortly afterwards.

State Veterinarian Bret D. Marsh commented: “In hindsight, we feel we got ahead of this virus by testing neighbouring farms the first day. The discovery of so many AI-positive sites - nine - in one day was unheard of, even at the height of the 2015 event.

"Our teams in the field had to scale-up, overnight. But we did it, and completed the task, in 38 days,” he said – click here to read more.

An outbreak of low pathogenic avian influenza was detected on a commercial turkey farm in Missouri this week.

The cases were detected through samples from healthy, non-clinical turkeys as part of routine, pre-slaughter surveillance, and a H5N1 virus was identified.

As a result, 39,000 birds were destroyed at the farm in Jasper County – read more.

Broiler Growth Traits Can Still Improve Further
While it took 84 days to produce a 1,8 kg broiler from 3,25 kg of feed back in the 1950s, there are broilers today that achieve this body weight after just 28 days from 1,4 kg of feed. Dr Ron Meijerhof talked about the prospects for further improvements in these traits with Glenneis Kriel.
