Pig & Poultry Fair 2016: Experts Highlight Opportunities for Poultry, Egg Consumption Growth

This week, ThePoultrySite has been out and about at the British Pig & Poultry Fair, finding out about the latest developments in the poultry meat and egg sectors.

In the first Forum of the event on Tuesday, Chris Hall of Cargill took an optimistic view overall of the prospects for the poultry meat industry.

Although he identified many challenges, such as Campylobacter, avian flu, antibiotic use and carcass balance, he pointed to the positive signals from significant growth in volume sales.

A huge leap in sales value of duck of 37 per cent in the past year shows the opportunities created by product innovation, he said.

Consultant Tom Willings, formerly of Noble Foods, said that consumption of eggs had potential to grow too, given the low egg consumption levels in the UK compared with other similar countries.

Keep an eye on ThePoultrySite for more reports from the Fair.

In other news, Oxfam America has released another report targeting working conditions of poultry processing employees in the US.

The report, based on three years’ worth of interviews with various stakeholders, alleges that workers are denied enough time or opportunity to use the toilet.

"We’re troubled by these claims but also question this group’s efforts to paint the whole industry with a broad brush based on a handful of anonymous claims,” said the National Chicken Council and the US Poultry & Egg Association in a joint statement.

“We believe such instances are extremely rare and that US poultry companies work hard to prevent them.” – Read more.
