Tesco Eggs Going Cage-Free by 2025

This week, UK supermarket chain Tesco announced it will stop sourcing any eggs from caged hens within ten years.

The move comes after discount supermarket chain Aldi announced their transition to cage-free in June, which sparked concern from the National Farmers Union (NFU) that retailers would overlook the considerable investment farmers made in moving away from battery cages to enriched colony cages.

However, Tesco’s largest supplier of eggs, Noble Foods, was supportive of Tesco's announcement, with Managing Director Veli Moluluoat saying the timeframe is manageable.

Transitioning to cage-free eggs has become a runaway trend in North America, but it is unclear whether farmers will be able to make the transition quickly enough to supply all the affected retailers and restaurant chains with cage-free eggs within their stated timelines – click here to read more.

In other news, new survey data presented at the 2016 Chicken Marketing Summit showed a whopping 87 per cent of consumers ate chicken purchased from a supermarket and 72 per cent purchased chicken from food service establishments in the two weeks prior to the survey.

That means chicken consumption rose substantially from the levels reported in 2015, especially in the food service sector.

“People are buying more chicken than last year and plan to buy more next year,” said Tom Super, Senior Vice President of Communications at the National Chicken Council – read more.
