Cage-Free Trend Gains Momentum in UK

This week, the move towards cage-free eggs in the UK took off in earnest.

Already a big consumer-driven trend in the US, supermarket and food service chains on the other side of the Atlantic are now pledging to only source eggs from non-caged hens by 2025.

Aldi began the transition last month and was followed by Tesco in mid-July. But the industry truly swung towards a cage-free future this week, when supermarkets Iceland and Morrisons and food service provider Sodexo all made similar commitments.

Some other retailers, such as Sainsbury’s, Co-op, Waitrose and M&S, were already cage-free.

Teenager Lucy Gavaghan set up a petition pressuring supermarkets to remove eggs from caged hens from shelves, which has now gained over 180,000 signatures. On the petition pages, Ms Gavaghan thanked supporters for making the change at Morrisons happen and vowed to target Asda next, as a major supermarket chain that has not yet announced a change.

The National Farmers Union called for retailers to provide clarity and detail to farmers on the issue, as it will affect the entire egg industry, not just those farmers using enriched cages.

“Although 2025 is nine years away, time is of the essence to allow our producers to make the necessary changes, with minimal disruption to their businesses and to our customers – the British public – a market worth an estimated £895 million," said NFU poultry board chairman Duncan Priestner.

Meanwhile, the British Free Range Egg Producers Association (BFREPA) said clear product labelling will be crucial as more retailers make the transition.

CEO Robert Gooch said: “Labelling a dozen eggs as ‘cage-free’ is not good enough because many shoppers will assume that means free range.

“A great deal of thought needs to go in to how these eggs are marketed to the public in a way that accurately reflects how they have been produced.”
