Tyson Foods Under Pressure Over Worker, Chicken Welfare

One of the US's largest chicken processors, Tyson Foods, has been in the news over the past week due to abuse allegations by animal welfare campaigners and safety violations found by inspectors.

An undercover video, produced by animal welfare campaign organisation Compassion Over Killing, reportedly shows Tyson employees engaging in violent acts of abuse against chickens inside several different contract broiler breeder facilities in Virginia.

The video was sent to three county attorneys in Virginia and was later made available for Tyson to view, prompting the company to sack some of its workers.

Dr Christine Daugherty, vice president of sustainable food production for Tyson Foods, said: "I'm disgusted and outraged by what’s shown in this video. We do not tolerate animal abuse and have fired ten people who were members of this crew. It was an obvious decision.” – Click here to read more.

Inspectors from the US Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) identified two repeated and 15 serious violations at a Tyson Foods chicken processing facility in Texas. The company now faces $263,498 in proposed fines.

The Department said that inspectors had found the violations after an employee suffered an amputation when his finger became stuck in an unguarded conveyor belt as he worked in the de-boning area and tried to remove chicken parts jammed in the belt.

“Tyson Foods must do much more to prevent disfiguring injuries like this one from happening,” said Dr David Michaels, assistant secretary of labour for Occupational Safety and Health – read more.
