Highly Pathogenic Bird Flu Found in Alaskan Duck

This week, the US’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) confirmed a detection of highly pathogenic H5N2 avian influenza in a wild mallard duck from Alaska. The bird was captured and sampled as part of ongoing wild bird surveillance.

H5N2 is the same strain that caused enormous losses in the US’s poultry industry in the spring of 2015, but it has not been found there since June 2015.

The risk of avian flu could have a major impact on the US poultry industry in the next few years, according to leading agricultural financer Rabobank.

The issues mainly relate to trade bans that are put in place by other countries when outbreaks occur. These are usually localised to the state involved, but according to Rabobank states with avian flu cases can lose as much as 75 per cent of their export potential as a result.

In other news, China has launched its first humane slaughter rules for poultry, meaning stress relief measures should be taken for the birds in the processes of catching, transporting, loading and unloading.

The rules came into effect in Shandong, China’s leading province for poultry production, where companies hope they will now be able to improve their image with potential buyers.

“It makes our products better and more acceptable to foreigners and our goods can be exported to more countries,” said Yang Shengren, a quality supervisor with Nine-Alliance Group, a chicken raising and processing company.

Book of the Week

Poultry Behaviour and Welfare

Poultry Behaviour and Welfare

This authoritative textbook provides an introduction and guide to poultry behaviour and welfare. It describes the origin and biology of the various species of bird that are of agricultural importance, as well as giving a succinct overview of their key behaviour patterns. There is careful discussion of the many factors that influence their welfare, and detailed consideration of the ways in which legislation and commercial interests interact in an attempt to satisfy the many needs involved. The final chapters discuss possible future developments within the subject. The book is in part an update of a previous work, Poultry Production Systems: Behaviour, Management and Welfare (CABI, 1992), completely rewritten and with much new material added.
