Food Service Giant Compass Group Joins Cage-Free Egg Revolution Amid Farmer Debt Concerns

This week, international contract caterer Compass Group PLC has announced a global commitment to go cage-free for all its shell and liquid egg supplies by 2025, following in the footsteps of a huge number of other companies that have made similar announcements over the summer.

Nicki Crayfourd, Director of Health, Safety and Environment for Compass Group explained: “Improving the welfare of farm animals is a key focus for our business and we’ve supported the sourcing of cage free eggs since 2009.”

Animal welfare campaign groups expressed their delight at the decision, which will affect millions of hens each year.

Philip Lymbery, CEO of animal welfare group Compassion in World Farming, said: “I hope that their commitment to go cage-free globally on all liquid and shell eggs by 2025 will be a catalyst for others to follow their example.” – Click here to read more.

Many farmers are unhappy with the trend towards cage-free eggs, as was highlighted in a recent meeting held by the Ulster Farmers’ Union for Northern Ireland-based producers and packers of eggs produced by hens in enriched colony cages.

Producers raised concerns at the meeting about the current levels of debt in the UK egg sector, which follows a £400 million upgrade from battery cages to enriched colony systems, after the smaller battery cages were banned across the EU in 2012.

The Union said it would work with retailers to gain more clarity for producers on what types of production systems would be expected in the future – read more.

Book of the Week

Poultry Behaviour and Welfare

Poultry Behaviour and Welfare

This authoritative textbook provides an introduction and guide to poultry behaviour and welfare. It describes the origin and biology of the various species of bird that are of agricultural importance, as well as giving a succinct overview of their key behaviour patterns. There is careful discussion of the many factors that influence their welfare, and detailed consideration of the ways in which legislation and commercial interests interact in an attempt to satisfy the many needs involved. The final chapters discuss possible future developments within the subject. The book is in part an update of a previous work, Poultry Production Systems: Behaviour, Management and Welfare (CABI, 1992), completely rewritten and with much new material added.
