World Leaders Agree Action to Fight Antimicrobial Resistance

World leaders have signalled their commitment to curb the spread of infections that are resistant to antimicrobial medicines, in a pledge agreed by 193 countries at the United Nations headquarters in New York yesterday.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) happens when bacteria, viruses, parasites, and fungi develop resistance against medicines that were previously able to cure them.

For the first time, Heads of State committed to taking a broad, coordinated approach to address the root causes of AMR across multiple sectors, especially human health, animal health and agriculture.

Leaders recognised the need for stronger systems to monitor drug-resistant infections and the volume of antimicrobials used in humans, animals and crops, as well as increased international cooperation and funding.

AMR is a problem not just in our hospitals, but on our farms and in our food, too.

“Agriculture must shoulder its share of responsibility, both by using antimicrobials more responsibly and by cutting down on the need to use them, through good farm hygiene,” said Dr José Graziano da Silva, Director-General of the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation – click here to read more.

In Canada, thousands of dollars were pledged last week to help the Quebec poultry industry reduce the preventative use of antibiotics.

Under this project, the Poultry Research Chair at the University of Montreal’s Faculty of Veterinary Medicine will assess various alternative strategies and their effects on flock performance, building on a previous research project. It will seek solutions that can be applied across the entire poultry industry.

Pierre-Luc Leblanc, President of Quebec’s poultry producers’ association, ÉVQ, said: “The Quebec poultry industry is committed to developing cutting-edge farming methods while maintaining strict, rigorous animal welfare standards.” – Read more.

Book of the Week

Poultry Behaviour and Welfare

Poultry Behaviour and Welfare

This authoritative textbook provides an introduction and guide to poultry behaviour and welfare. It describes the origin and biology of the various species of bird that are of agricultural importance, as well as giving a succinct overview of their key behaviour patterns. There is careful discussion of the many factors that influence their welfare, and detailed consideration of the ways in which legislation and commercial interests interact in an attempt to satisfy the many needs involved. The final chapters discuss possible future developments within the subject. The book is in part an update of a previous work, Poultry Production Systems: Behaviour, Management and Welfare (CABI, 1992), completely rewritten and with much new material added.
