Researchers Improve Diet of Female Broilers

Recent research has revealed new ways to improve the diet of female broilers, by more closely matching their diets to their nutritional requirements.

Since feed is a major component of the total cost of production of broiler chickens, feed formulation and feed conversion efficiency are particularly important to the economically efficient production of broilers.

Researchers Dr Sami Dridi and Dr Michael Kidd at the University of Arkansas worked out the ideal levels of the amino acid valine that should be included in female broiler diets. Amino acid levels need to be closely managed because insufficient or excessive levels can be detrimental to cell growth.

The results achieved by the scientists give valuable information for nutritionists and broiler companies - they found that optimising the amounts of valine in the diet gave improvements in body weight, feed conversion and breast meat yield. In addition, the percentage of fat in the carcass was reduced – Click here to read more.

In other news this week, both the Netherlands and Germany announced further progress in reducing antibiotic use in animal agriculture, as part of their efforts to try and prevent resistance.

In the first half of 2016 alone, antibiotics use decreased by 18 per cent compared to 2015, according to NEPLUVI, the Dutch association of poultry meat producing companies.

Meanwhile, German farmers have reported a reduction in antibiotic use for the fourth time in a row, in a biannual survey of usage on larger farms.

Agriculture Minister Christian Schmidt commented: “We have created a successful approach to consistently measure the use of antibiotics in animal husbandry and we continue to work hard to reduce the use of antibiotics.

“This will only succeed if veterinary and human medicine work closely together.”
