UK Shoppers Willing to Pay More for Free Range Eggs

More than three quarters of UK shoppers who buy free range eggs are happy to pay a premium for them, according to OnePoll survey results released this week to coincide with British Egg Week 2016, which also encompasses World Egg Day on Friday 14 October.

Even Brits who usually buy a value egg agree that free range eggs should be priced higher than those produced by birds which don’t go outside.

The findings come shortly after major retailers and food service companies recently announced that they will be phasing out sourcing eggs from enriched colony systems by 2025. Free range egg farmers say the change in sourcing policy must not lead to their product being downgraded to a budget option.

Myles Thomas, Love Free Range Eggs campaign ambassador and farmer, said: “Free range eggs have traditionally enjoyed a small premium which reflects the increased cost of running a unit that permits the birds space to range outside. To take that premium away would be disastrous for free range egg producers.

“The results of this survey show that the public agrees with us and it is a clear indication that retailers need to offer British eggs at a variety of price points.” – Click here to read more.

In other news this week, new US research has shown that eggs from small flocks of chickens are just as likely to be contaminated with Salmonella enteritidis as eggs from larger, commercial flocks sold in stores.

Large flocks have to follow regulations to prevent Salmonella contamination, and the researchers suggested the results mean more attention should be paid to the risks of Salmonella in small or backyard flocks.

The research highlights the potential risk posed by the consumption of eggs produced by backyard and small layer flocks,” lead researcher Subhashinie Kariyawasam said.

”These findings emphasise the importance of small-producer education on Salmonella enteritidis control measures and perhaps implementation of egg quality-assurance practices to prevent contamination of eggs produced by backyard and other small layer flocks.” – Read more.
