US Poultry Workers’ Injury, Illness Rate at All-Time Low

The incidence of nonfatal occupational injuries and illnesses in the poultry sector, which includes slaughter and processing, remains at an all-time low, according to the 2015 Injury and Illness Report released last Friday by the Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

The total recordable poultry processing illness and injury rate for 2015 was 4.3 cases per 100 full-time workers (per year), the same rate as 2014, and lower than the 2015 rate of 4.7 for the entire food manufacturing sector.

Poultry processing’s 2015 rate of 4.3 represents an 81 per cent decrease from 1994 (the oldest data available on the BLS website), when the recorded rate was 22.7, demonstrating the progress the industry has made in improving safety for its workforce.

Poultry processing plants in particular have come under fire in recent years, by charities looking to improve the lot of workers – click here to read more.

In other news this week, new research from Australia has found hens fed the saltbush plant as part of their diet produced eggs with a brighter yolk colour.

The saltbush eggs were also given the taste test seal of approval during a series of food sensory sessions, where around 120 consumers tasted a range of hard boiled and scrambled saltbush eggs.

The research project identified that saltbush could be suitable for Australian free range farms because the drought hardy plant required little or no irrigation once established and could cope with dry, hot summers – read more.
