Dutch Poultry Forced Indoors as Bird Flu Spreads Around Europe

Government officials and the European Commission have reacted to reports of avian influenza detections around Europe with calls for increased vigilance against the disease.

Germany, Austria, Hungary, Poland and Switzerland have reported birds killed by the H5N8 strain of the disease. In Hungary, the disease affected a turkey fattening farm, whereas in the other countries wild waterfowl were affected. In the Netherlands, dead waterfowl were also found, but it is not yet known which strain of avian flu killed them.

The increased risk of spread, caused by birds ranging outside and the high density of poultry farms in the country, led the Dutch State Secretary for Economic Affairs, Martijn van Dam, to order poultry companies to keep birds indoors. He also urged poultry companies to improve hygiene and biosecurity, including minimising the number of visitors to poultry farms.

On the other side of the Atlantic, voters elected Donald Trump to become President of the United States in January, which came as a surprise to many and caused some volatility on the markets. According to the latest Daily Livestock Report from Steiner Consulting Group, currency shifts, particularly in the value of the Mexican peso, could have more impact on the US meat industry in the short term.

In the longer term, the Report suggested that Mr Trump’s anti-trade stance could be detrimental to the chicken and pork industries, as exports are significant drivers for these meats. Last year chicken exports were constrained due to bird flu bans but in prior years the share of exports in chicken has been around 19‐20 per cent – read more.
