Bird Flu Continues to Spread through Europe

More outbreaks of H5N8 highly pathogenic avian influenza have been found all over Europe in the past few days.

Hungary has confirmed outbreaks on nine more farms in the south of the country, mainly affecting geese and ducks. Over 107,000 birds were destroyed as a result of the outbreaks in the south of the country.

Meanwhile in Germany, five backyard holdings have been affected at the country's border with the Baltic Sea in the north-eastern Mecklenburg-Vorpommern region. In the Lower Saxony region an outbreak of H5N8 has been reported on a turkey farm by the local authorities, and around 16,000 birds will have to be depopulated there, but this has not yet been officially reported to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE).

Switzerland's latest official report to the OIE shows 51 wild birds died in 39 separate incidents across the country. Species affected were mainly tufted ducks and herring gulls, but also included other waterfowl such as grebes and birds of prey including a falcon and a buzzard.

Other outbreaks of avian flu were reported in wild birds in the Netherlands, Sweden and Russia – click here to read more.

Americans are celebrating Thanksgiving today, and this week we reported on the annual informal price survey conducted by the American Farm Bureau Federation on the cost of a traditional dinner, including of course the turkey.

A 16-pound turkey came in at a total of $22.74 this year. That’s roughly $1.42 per pound, a decrease of 2 cents per pound, or a total of 30 cents per whole turkey, compared to 2015.

“Consumers will pay less than $5 per person for a classic Thanksgiving dinner this year,” AFBF Director of Market Intelligence Dr John Newton said.

However, another farming organisation, the US’s National Farmers Union, highlighted the small share that farmers receive of Americans’ spending on Thanksgiving food.

“It’s important to understand the difference between the price consumers pay for food at the grocery store or restaurant and the commodity prices farmers are paid for their products. Just recently food costs started to drop, but farm and ranch families have been plagued by low commodity prices for nearly three years,” said Roger Johnson, president of NFU – read more.
