Global Outbreaks of Avian Flu Strike Farms and Kill Wild Birds

Outbreaks of the H5N8 strain of highly pathogenic avian influenza have been escalating around Europe and beyond in the last week.

The disease has been spreading along with migrating birds over the past few weeks, killing both wild birds and farmed poultry as far flung as Hungary, India and Iran.

The flu strain has now reached the Nordic countries. Sweden reported wild birds dead early last week, but at the end of the week the country reported an outbreak on a layer farm in the southern Skåne Län region. Finland has also reported outbreaks in ducks found dead on the southern coast of the country.

France, Romania, Switzerland, Germany and Egypt all reported findings of infected wild birds this week. Meanwhile, commercial farms have been affected in the Netherlands and backyard birds have been affected in Ukraine and Germany.

World Health Organisation (WHO) information shows that no humans have yet been infected with the H5N8 virus, although some people have been infected with a related H5N6 virus in the past. Studies of previously isolated influenza A(H5N8) viruses have indicated that the virus does not transmit efficiently in ferrets, which is a model for influenza infections in humans – Click here to read more.

However, it is not only this type of avian flu that has been causing havoc around the world recently. Japan and South Korea have both culled thousands of birds after outbreaks that are thought to be linked. In West Africa, outbreaks of H5N1 bird flu have been ongoing since 2015, and this week it was Nigeria and Ghana bearing the brunt.
