Paul McMullin
Paul McMullin qualified as a veterinarian from Dublin in 1975. After a period in general practice in Ireland, he worked for a poultry breeding company in Brazil for 2 years. This was followed by 8 years with Merck Sharp & Dohme Research Laboratories providing poultry disease diagnostic and other technical services, as well as developing products for the poultry industry.

Paul is fluent in Portuguese and can also communicate in Spanish. After 4 years as Technical Services Manager with MSD Agvet in the UK, he joined his present company in 1992. Poultry Health Services supplies veterinary consultancy and a broad range of laboratory services for the UK poultry industry.

He is a holder of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons Diploma in Poultry Medicine and Production and is an RCVS recognised specialist and examiner in this area. He is past Secretary of the British Veterinary Poultry Association and has represented BVPA in working groups on the use of antibiotics in animal production at UK, European and world level. He also chaired the RUMA working party which developed the first set of RUMA guidelines.

In August 2001 Paul led the management buyout of Poultry Health Services and is its first Managing Director. He is a regular speaker at national and international meetings, in particular in Europe and South America. He was an invited keynote speaker at the 2003 World Veterinary Poultry Association Congress in Denver. He is interested in all aspects of health management, disease control and quality production systems in poultry.

Richard Scragg
Richard is a well-known Poultry Nutritionist with extensive Worldwide commercial experience. He is the founding member and Chairman of the Optivite Nutrition Group, with four specialist manufacturing sites.

Richard studied animal nutrition at Nottingham University and immediately after graduating conducted novel research in to the effect of environmental conditions on poultry performance which resulted in the release of new National recommendations, that were both practical and profitable. This was followed by investigations in to the effect of feeding systems on overall net farm profitability, which takes in to account of the numerous interactions between nutrient supply, feeding systems, breed effects and environment.

Richard has always had a keen interest in the amino acids requirements of poultry and, as the genetics have improved, identified a need to review the overall protein metabolism of the bird. This again led to unique investigations in to the effect of protein/amino acid supply on performance and profitability. The early recommendations on the use of nitrogen reduced diets whilst maintaining amino acid balance was initially questioned but the significance of the work is now seen in the use of Richards feeding regimes around the World.

With this wide practical husbandry and nutritional expertise Richard identified a unique business opportunity in the poultry industry and, in 1987, founded Optivite Ltd. The Company has since developed in to a multi-faceted organisation, Optivite Nutrition Group, with expertise in nutrition across all the species, vitamin/mineral production, salmonella and other microbiological control, replacers for digestive enhancers, practical on-farm management and compound milling. The company now operates successfully in the UK, Europe, N America, Latin America, and SE Asia.

Richard is a member of the World's Poultry Science Association, regularly contributes to industry journals and is a regular presenter to poultry producer meetings and International poultry symposia.
