Egg farm faces second investigation

19 September 2006

US - The final word is not yet in on a complaint that the Vermont Egg Farm has violated wastewater rules at their 100,000-hen Highgate Center facility.

Though state agriculture officials have already closed their investigation into wastewater handling at Vermont's largest poultry operation, a Vermont Agency of Natural Resources investigation is still ongoing.
"We do have a complaint. We are looking into it," said ANR's Chief Environmental Enforcement Officer Herb Conly on Monday. The agency received the complaint in late August, he said, adding that he cannot release specifics until the case is closed.

The Vermont Agency of Agriculture concluded last week that VEF was complying with aspects of its permit as overseen by that agency.

Though both investigations stem from the same complaint - that the 100,000-hen operation is improperly applying wastewater from its egg washing process directly onto land - the investigations are not redundant, said Conly.
