Poultry processor Amick Farms sold to Illinois firm
US - Poultry processor Amick Farms, one of the Midlands' largest employers, has been sold to an Illinois meat distributor.

Owner Bill Amick sold the 65-year-old family-owned business in Batesburg-Leesville to OSI Group, which is based in Aurora, Ill. The price was not disclosed.
The firm, which supplies deboned chickens to wholesalers and restaurants, plans to keep it's 1,500-employee operation intact and operate under the Amick Farms name, said Fred West, a spokesman for Amick. The sale is to be completed Oct. 30.
Amick Farm's founder, A.D. Amick, started the firm in 1941 with 500 chicks and made deliveries to neighbors in barrels of ice, according to a company history.
OSI has poultry plants in Ireland and Brazil, but none in the United States. That will provide some security for jobs at the operation, where workers start at about $7 per hour, West said.
"This will be good for Amick Farms," West said. "The stability ... has only been strengthened."
