Poultry rates ease amid improved supply in Pakistan

PAKISTAN - No major change has been witnessed in commodity prices after Ramazan while low demand from interior parts of the country has put brakes on further increase in prices of pulses, meat and vegetables.

Poultry rates eased amid improved supply from other provinces. Poultry prices had surged to unjustified level during last two months. City District Government Karachi had announced special rates of commodities during Ramazan, and said it would monitor commodity prices regularly even after Ramazan.

Though commodity prices fixed by CDGK could not be implemented in full spirit and consumers had to pay high rates for most of daily-use kitchen items, a regular and comprehensive price monitoring mechanism could bring good results in this regard.

Meat merchants are now selling meat at pre-Ramazan rates, milk sellers too are charging pre-Ramazan prices after being cowed down by CDGK in the holy month. Prices of grains, pulses and edible oils are expected to fluctuate after inventories of retailers wear off.

Normal trading activity would resume in coming weeks as stocks piled up by retailers during Ramazan are likely to wear off, market sources said.
