Poultry cull carried out in South Korea

A total of 23,000 chickens and ducks have been killed in Asan, about 90 kilometers (55 miles) south of Seoul, where the outbreak of bird flu -- South Korea's fourth in less than a month -- occurred, said Agriculture Ministry official Lee Joo-won.

The Agriculture Ministry has confirmed that the outbreak at the Asan duck farm was an H5 strain, but said further tests are needed to determine if it was the deadly H5N1 virus.

South Korea has suffered three H5N1 outbreaks at chicken and quail farms since November, resulting in the culling of more than 1 million poultry in an attempt to keep the disease from spreading.
