Australians will reject cloned meat, anti-GM group says

AUSTRALIA - A lobby group opposed to the genetic modification of animals says the Australian public will reject meat from cloned animals, even though the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has ruled it is safe.

The FDA has found that there is no difference between meat and milk from cloned and non-cloned animals, and it does not think cloned meat should be labelled.

But Australian Gene Ethics Network spokesman Bob Phelps disputes that finding.

"The public has to have a say and at the moment the Australian public says no to the genetically engineered foods," he said.

"Over 60 per cent of Australians, according to surveys done by Biotechnology Australia, shows that Australians reject cloned animals."
