Newcastle Disease Threatens Papau New Guinea Poultry Industry
PAPAU NEW GUINEA - The K600 million poultry industry in the country is under threat from being wiped out should the Newcastle disease spread into the mainland.The disease is considered the most serious type affecting poultry and birds worldwide and is currently present in the East New Britain (ENB) province.
The Poultry Industry Association (PIA) said the industry including that of the poultry meat industry is worth K250-K300 million.
The rest of the value covers the egg market, spin-off businesses such as feed manufacturing, “didiman” supply, transport companies and government tax from raw material imports. The PIA said the outbreak in the ENB was “a serious situation” and the possibility of the disease reaching the mainland is real.
The organisation had expressed concern at the way in which National Agriculture Quarantine and Inspection Authority (NAQIA) has responded to the presence of the disease in the ENB so far.
