Maple Leaf Foods closing poultry plant in Nova Scotia
HALIFAX - Almost 400 people in Nova Scotia's Annapolis Valley will lose their jobs when food processor Maple Leaf Foods Inc. (TSX:MFI) closes its aging poultry plant in Canard at the end of April.The Toronto company, which is restructuring operations to improve its finances, says the plant is more than 50 years old and isn't productive enough to justify a major reinvestment.
"We deeply regret the impact this will have on our employees and we will be providing financial and outplacement support to ease their transition," Bruce McCullagh, the company's senior vice-president of poultry operations, said in a statement late Tuesday.
The Canard plant, which employs 380, produces fresh poultry products, primarily for customers in Atlantic Canada.
Mark Parent, Nova Scotia's environment minister, said Maple Leaf did not ask the government for any financial help to avoid the closure.
