Chicken sellers report sales slump

JAKARTA - The outbreak of bird flu in the city has caused the incomes of poultry vendors in traditional markets to plummet.

In Palmerah market in Central Jakarta, for example, news portal Tempointeraktif reported a 50 percent drop in chicken sales.

"It's been like this for the last two weeks," said Yatmi, whose profits have halved since the most recent outbreak of the HN51 virus.

Another vendor, Warsinah, 34, said she was struggling to keep her business afloat.

"I have only been making about Rp 50,000 (about US$5.30) a day since bird flu hit the headlines again.

"I hope things pick up soon," she said.
