Assistant Secretary Salvador Salacup, speaking during the stop-over of the DA's Information Caravan on Rice and Corn here, said the DA envisions to achieve this objective by opening up additional two million hectares for agriculture.

He said this will enable the country to meet its target in food self-sufficiency and also create two million additional jobs.

These two million additional jobs, he said, will be the DA's contribution to the 10 million jobs envisioned by President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo in her 10-point agenda up to the end of her term in 2010.

The caravan, attended by farmers from Pangasinan, La Union, Ilocos Sur and Ilocos Norte, is basically an information drive to campaign hard on agricultural productivity in line with the government's vision of ensuring food security and giving more profits to farmers and fisher folks, Salacup said.

The whole-day caravan showcases different projects put up by the DA in food production, like the planting of rice, corn and vegetables, and raising of fish and livestock which they are sharing to the other farmers for them to improve their production.
