Print This Page Indonesia: Demand falls as backyard poultry is banned
JAKARTA - Demand for poultry products in the Indonesian capital Jakarta has fallen by as much as 50 per cent amidst confusion about how the H5N1 virus is passed to humans.But the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation says a city-wide ban on backyard poultry, which comes into force Wednesday, will also rob many of a vital source of nutrition.
Our reporter in Jakarta, Katie Hamann, says a recent spike in bird flu infections and steps to curb the spread of the virus is turning Jakartan's off their chicken.
The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation issued a statement urging people to continue eating poultry and advising of safe preparation methods.
